Lumen: The Art and Science of Light Medieval artists created dazzling light-filled environments with gold, crystal, and glass, evoking the divine realms. Light, long associated with divinity, was also central to scientific inquiry. While today science and religion are often viewed separately, medieval people intertwined them. Focusing on the arts of Western Europe, this exhibition explores how Christian, Jewish, and Muslim philosophers, theologians, and artists studied the science of light during the “Long Middle Ages” (800–1600).
