About the event

It's Halloween, "SAINTS" EVENING Quiet Day

Monday, October 31

9:30 am–4 pm (PST) over Zoom

(includes an hour break for lunch)

A Benedictine Monk and a Presbyterian Spiritual Director walk into a bar…I mean a chapel.

The word ‘Halloween” or Hallowe’en dates to about 1745 and is of Christian origin. It means “saint’s evening”, coming from the Scottish term for All Hallows’ Eve: the evening before All Hallows’ Day.

Join Father Francis Benedict of Saint Andrew’s Abbey and the Rev. Dr. Care Crawford as they co-lead a Quiet Day and have conversations about SAINTS. No masks or costumes, no tricks, but we hope you will TREAT YOURSELF to a day set aside and share with us. Come discover what the Apostle Paul knew- we are all saints! (and sinners too!)

Father Francis was ordained a priest in 1976.  He has served as guest master, novice master, kitchen master, abbot, fundraiser, general chairman of the once-annual Valyermo Fall Festival, retreat presenter, Oblate director, and coordinator of burials at the monastic cemetery.  He is one gifted and busy monk! Father Francis joined Saint Andrew’s because he found this monastery appealing in its size, simplicity, and the wisdom of its founders, who were all from Europe and Asia and had been missionaries in China. He was drawn to the sense of holiness of life at St. Andrews.  Father Francis loves the life of prayer, the Liturgy of Hours, the daily Eucharist, times for Lectio Divina, and personal prayer.

Care Crawford is the President of CFDM Southern California and has served for 36 years as a Pastor of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care at Bel Air Presbyterian Church. A spiritual director and trained supervisor, she also teaches at some graduate institutions. Her delight is seeing God at work in people’s lives. Her connection with St. Andrew’s Abbey and Father Francis is 35+ years. Father Francis is a friend and an encourager. Care is excited to co-lead this Quiet Day with her dear monk friend! Unlike Francis, she has not been the “master” of anything but enjoys her life shared with her husband, Steve, and two adorable pups.

Registration fee is $45 and a Zoom link will be sent after registration.
